Kingsmen: One name. One goal. One vision.
Kingsmen 101
August 6, 2005, 12:01 am
Kingsmen 101 : A glossary of terms for new members of the Kingsmen StarCorps.
1. SPECTEMUR AGENDO: Our corps motto that is displayed on our Coat of Arms which translates as "Let Us Be Judged By Our Actions". This means that "what you do defines who you really are".
2. HYPE: A word that we use to remind us of the determination, drive and intensity that is required to win. HYPE is not a noun, it's a verb. It's something you do.
3. DCI: A title to be won. The Drum Corps International World Championship.
4. MILITARY BEARING: Our tradition of precision, execution and style.
5. CLASS: Our tradition of respect for each other and how we present ourselves to the public.
6. WARM UP: Something that we take extremely serious.
7. TICK: A mistake that won't happen again.
8. 5 MINUTE DRILL: Full Corps in a complete circle marking time with high leg-lift. The ultimate endurance builder at the end of each practice.

Dear Friends,
The Kingsmen StarCorps needs your help.
We are nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt youth organization that will provide young people between the ages of 14 and 22 with the unique opportunity to compete at the Drum Corps International Championship each year.
Our mission is to create performing arts programs that will enrich the lives of young people through our commitment to the achievement of performance excellence. This commitment combined with participation in competitive Drum & Bugle Corps activities creates an educational environment where young people learn the important values of dedication, self-discipline, self-confidence, character and achievement. With this unique experience, our young people will carry these key values back into the community.
Our Drum & Bugle Corps will perform exciting music while executing difficult maneuvers on a football field. This gives our young people the pure joy of performing music, the exhilaration of athletic achievement, and the thrill of performing before thousands of cheering fans. In addition to developing music and performing arts skills, many alumni can attest that the young people who participate in our activity get higher grades in school, have fewer problems with drugs and alcohol, and go on to college and have successful careers.
It's not easy to finance a high-quality performing arts program such as ours. Funding a nonprofit youth organization with the goal of becoming a world class Drum & Bugle Corps is an expensive enterprise. Our immediate need is to purchase musical instruments and uniforms. Our ongoing need is to cover the rising costs of transportation, housing and fuel that will have a major financial impact during each summer tour. The goal for our first year annual budget is $800,000.
The simple fact is that we need your donation. No contribution is too small. A donation to The Kingsmen StarCorps provides general operating support that enables young people to benefit from our programs. As a public charity, The Kingsmen StarCorps is supported by gifts and grants from individuals, foundations and corporations. Every contribution sends a signal to our potential donors that people believe in what we do for our youth and that our community supports us.
Our EIN is 20-2150103. We would appreciate any donation that you are able to make to us. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Gary Kean, Manager

Notes of Wisdom
July 22, 2005, 10:12 am
Notes of Wisdom for Making Group Decisions:
- Aggregate the ideas, thoughts and decisions of each individual in the group to reach a decision.
- Diversity increases the quality of the aggregated wisdom of the group.
- Diversity brings new information and new information is valuable.
- The best collective decisions are the product of disagreement and contest, not consensus or compromise.
- The best way for a group to be smart is for each person to think and act as independently as possible.
